A neat find

I recently had the great fortune of acquiring a machine I never expected to own. Amidst attending to ailing family members and working on a music recording project I made the time to pick this machine up, which from the photo that was initially supplied I was figuring it was nickel-plated. After I picked it up and was able to examine the machine it was obvious it was a gold-plated Model D Triumph.

The machine was once factory-equipped with a repeater however this was not present with the machine when I acquired it, nor was the horn or crane. I was told that this Triumph had been in the same family since at least the 1960's. The gentlemen who previously owned the phonograph informed me his father remembered it having a "cherry wood" horn, which I assume was actually a Mahogany horn.

Based on the price figures in Frow's book it looks like this machine was over double the cost of a typical Model D Triumph with a Cygnet horn. The serial number for this D seems high to me as I've been under the impression the Triumph serial range tops out around 90,000 but I suppose the same serial number wonkiness in found in other models may apply to Triumphs as well?

Holy Toledo! Someone rubbed off all that gold plating...!

I can come to terms with neglect, but deliberate depredation by fools just bewilders me. Whoever did this probably didn't realize it was gold plate, and thought he was polishing it up nicely. Gawd... :x

There - - that feels better. It's still a pretty cool machine. You seem to have phenomenal luck finding nicer machines in the wild; congratulations! :)

That's what I was hoping too, but the lid latches and areas around screw heads, pulley flanges, etc. reveal the awful truth...

Oh my goodness. I see what you mean. What a shame. As you say, someone probably thought it was tarnish or ?? and decided to spruce it up.
Still a great find though.

I bet the same doofus who wiped the topworks did the cheesy repair work to the top frame.

Thanks, George! I thought getting a Hexaphone was pretty cool but this certainly takes the cake!

Yes this is a lovely phonograph! It is a shame the horn is missing. I must be missing something as I do not see the serial number stated, so I ask what is the serial number?
Thank you,
Allen

It's No.81925. That's well within the documented range of Model D Triumphs. :)

George, was there a thread a few years ago regarding Triumph serial data? Would you happen to have a link on hand if there is one?
