I'm having difficulty opening it. Is there a latch? Inside I know there's a crank and maybe a few other pieces. DO I simply insert the crank or is there a special way? I don't want to break it.

If you're referring to removing the lid just pull outward on each of the side latches and remove the lid by lifting the lid handle on top upward. The two side latches lock the lid in place when pushed completely in.

Here is a picture off Ebay of the latches on each end of the machine. Just pull them out and then lift the lid off.

Your machine is probably not a model C as that is one of the harder to find standard models. Sometime people will mistakenly think because the reproducer is marked model C, it is a Standard model C. Once you show a picture of the machine (after you get the lid off) someone will be able to tell you what the model is.

If that;s the original winding handle... It's more likely a Edison Model "A" Standard.

The picture I posted that shows the handle is off an Ebay auction, not the OP's machine.

What model is it. Please let me know.

Also, what is this brush thing I found in the lid?

Looks like a model B standard to me. The brush is a record brush.

Both. It's a "Place" Record Brush, and it slides onto the underside of the carriage; quite near the reproducer tail weight that's marked "MODEL C." When the carriage is lowered into playing position, the brush comes into contact with the record surface.
