From what I know all Firesides A or B always had the top gear cover. Over the years I don't remember hearing or reading about them coming without a top gear cover.

Ditto: Both the Fireside Model A (2/4-min.) and Model B (4-min. only) came with gear covers.
By the way, the Fireside gear cover is different than those on an Edison Standard Model E, F, and G.

It's always nice to find an original but Ron Sitko sells a nice replacement. Jerry

The Fireside gear cover was a bent piece of steel with a slot cut into it for the crane. This cover was used for the Amberola VIII, X, and DX, but there was no slot cut for the crane. These were painted black with gold stripes. The gear covers for the Standards were cast iron.
