For those fortunate enough to own an Edison Standard, Home, or Spring Motor/Triumph with a Polyphone Attachment, a problem has presented itself. How does one mount the horns to match the catalog illustrations??
Polyelbowcatalog.jpg
There are numerous Edison Polyphones residing in collections around the world whose owners have despaired of ever finding an original set of elbows, and who have resorted to having their horns pointing every-which-way. Otherwise spectacular machines have been improperly displayed through no fault of their owners. I have yet to locate any original Polyphone elbows for these models.

A year ago, a good friend was lamenting this situation in light of his three Polyphones (lucky man indeed!) which, because of having no elbows, could not be displayed to his satisfaction. I told my friend that I - with all my cleverness and Yankee Ingenuity - would fabricate elbows for his three machines that would look like those in the old catalogs. My friend was worried that it would be a major hassle, but I assured him that it would be no problem at all. It turned out my friend was smarter than I was! :)

Admittedly, other large projects delayed bringing this project to fruition, but finally - a year later - I am sending my friend his three sets of Polyphone elbows. As I slowly learned how to replicate these elbows, it occurred to me that it would be a shame not to provide sets to others who need them. To that end, I have made up a few sets of Polyphone elbows for Standard, Home, and Triumph/Spring Motor. I hope I have made enough to satisfy whatever demand there is, because I have no desire to make any more of them. I estimate each set consumed approx. 1.5 hours. And it's summertime...

These Polyphone elbows are made of copper, carefully shaped in a special jig, and nickel-plated in dull nickel to blend in with century-old finishes. Each set consist of a small elbow for the front horn and a larger elbow for the rear horn. They are offered in two configurations: one for common 14" black & brass horns:

...and the other for Polyphone-type funnel horns 15" long with 6.5 inch bells.

Please specify which type you're using.

I can deliver these to the Union show for those who wish to pick up/pay there and save the $6.80 postage (U.S. Priority Mail).

No Paypal for these, but your personal check is fine. If you wish a set delivered by mail, include $6.80 postage (additional sets ship free in the same box). For my address, either PM me or send me an email at gpaul2000 (at) AOL (dot) com.

Finally, be aware that these are hand-made items, and are not necessarily "perfect." No computers or automated machinery were used. However, I would not sell anything that I wouldn't use in my own collection. My copper wastage was fully 50%. But if your standards are higher than mine, I will happily issue a refund within 3 days of delivery if you pay the shipping of the elbows back to me. It's a good transaction only if both parties are happy. :)

Enjoy the summer! :)

George,
Thanks for your efforts in making these elbows to complete some rare set ups. Does the back horn elbow fit pretty tight to the reproducer neck to keep it from swinging down?

Hi Ken,

Yes, the rear elbow - while not exactly snug - is tight enough to keep the horn facing in the right direction. Actually, once the horn is in place, it wants to stay where it is. In the case of a reproducer whose tube is slightly worn or otherwise undersized, a small piece of masking tape inside the rear elbow coupler would probably snug it up if needed. This has not been necessary on any elbows in this bunch on this particular Home.

Thanks to all who have contacted me so far. 10 sets are spoken for, which is about half of the group.

Hi George

I will take a set of elbows for the black & brass horns. I will pick them up and pay at Union if that's ok.

I picked up my set from George at Union and have now updated my Standard Polyphone. Looks great! I opted to use an original elbow for the front reproducer; the horns line up perfectly.

Great job, George. Thanks!
