I can not find the thread on a home type A that a member wanted to know what color the banner was as the shellac had discolored badly and it was a little hard to discern what the banner color was. I was finishing my four clip so I will try to show the difference. I did not realize that they were different types of A and was glad for the Information. I seem to learn something all the time on the forum and am glad I found it. A lot of experts here who have been involved with talking machines for decades. I am posting four machines and I hope I can match them up when I post them The type three has two positions on the Edison bedplate label so I did not know if it was a variance of it. I finally found out about shellac for touching up touch ups on the case and banners after filling in the banner... Blends in the repair nicely.. serial numbers are 4 clip h29952,, red banner h52675 ,black banner top decal h972249 decal moved to side black banner 141033....Tom B

If you really want to learn about the many different models, and variations of cases, etc., you should pick up a copy of George L. Frow's book, Edison Cylinder Phonograph Companion.

It can be difficult to find, and sometimes a little pricey, but it's the definitive source of information available.

I'm unfamiliar with the "Type 1," "Type 2," "Type 3," and "Type 3a" nomenclature, but the component you're calling a bedplate is actually the top casting or upper casting. The bedplate is the flat plate below the top/upper casting to which the motor is attached.

Tom, regarding George L. Frow's Edison Cylinder Phonograph Companion, the latest digital-only version is inexpensive at $14.95, so long as you have the operating system to view it.

The publisher also still has print copies, which are indeed pricey, but at least easily available.

I picked those terms up from another post , the type one etc. I could not find the post. George I am bad on Edison parts names at times. I sometimes get a ½ nut, feed screw or mandrel mixed up at my age. I will get the Flow book on line it looks good especially in color. I need it . Thanks all Tom B

As I often say, getting older beats the alternative! (At least that's what I tell myself...)

I noticed that the top photo is labeled as a "type three", but it bears the red decal on the cabinet rather than the lid. You have labeled this version "type two" in another photo. I suspect a new collector would be confused. This is not meant as criticism; only clarification.

I am not aware of the "Type" designation being used in the USA, but it was used in the UK by Edison-Bell.
