Hi All,
I wondered if any one had a photo of a record brush installed on an Edison Standard or could describe where it is installed in detail.

I think if you do a forum search, you will find several pics of a 'Place' brush mounted. Here it is shown in an original ad (circa 1908).

I see that in the case of the angled reproducer support it is mounted behind the reproducer. I have a horizontal reproducer mount and a diamond reproducer and I assume the brush should be mounted in front of the reproducer but as one of my first Engineering prof. said to assume is to make an ass out of you and me so I will now do as you suggested.

I could be wrong. However, I have never seen a 'Place' brush (like you bought) used in this application. I am also assuming this is regarding the 'Place' brush you bought recently off Ebay. If so, it is certainly not for vertical carriages.
Did you ever mention your Standard had such a carriage before.. I can't recall.

No I did not mention this but I am not that knowledgeable to know that that was an issue. Additionally, the 1-A I bought last year has a horizontal reproducer and it has a brush leading me to think it was not an issue.
By the way the 1-A always had an issue with speed change 2 to 4 min. and most recently refuses to operate when the start lever is engaged. I intend to go to Loews to buy a 2 x 12 and a 1" dowel to make an open stand to sit the 1-A mechanism on to examine it's functioning and help to diagnose it's problems.

Oh I should state that I have a Standard not a Fireside. I just checked if the brush could be mounted on the reproducer carriage in front of the record but the brush is too wide to mount there.
Well what can I say: live and learn and at 77 I am still in that process but it beats the hell out of the alternative.

Standard, Fireside or Home with a 45 degree carriage would utilize the same 'Place'#2 brush.

Edison 1A's are a completely different mechanism and have a 'factory' brush set up.

Place brushes are an aftermarket item and not made by Edison.

Thank you I thought they all were after market. How about the Opera did it also have a manufacturer supplied brush or was there an after market one?

Like the A1....factory equipped brush.. . As mentioned to all new collectors....it never hurts to invest in some good books on the subject.

I would also recommend looking over for free, 'The Talking Machine World' (1905-1928) issues on line. The nice thing about them is they are searchable. So, for example....you type in "Place brush" and it will find any and all articles/ads for you. A wonderful free resource for the novice and advanced collector.

Also, for earlier research from the same free site....The short lived 'The Phonoscope' (1896-1900). Unfortunately, the last year of publication (first few months of 1900) are not available on this site. Some of us have these last issues from microfilm. Again, these issues are searchable and makes things very easy to locate by name...like..."Berliner"... .
