Hello,
There is a Credenza for sale near me. I am wondering what wood you think it is. I am used to seeing dark mahogany but this looks much lighter?

Walnut, probably American walnut. There can't be many of those around!

It's walnut. I'm surprised there is no carving around the case just underneath the lid, though.

Grain looks walnut but the color and tone just don't look right... Probably creatively refinished.

Any chance of posting a photo showing the turntable, etc.? At second glance, it looks more like a Credenza clone (knock-off) made by some company other than Victor. As Garret noted, the "rosettes" or carvings are missing from the trim under the lid. I also noticed that the center door's knobs are too high--glass knobs were not used on the Credenza--and the trim on the center door is different from the convention 4-door model's, and looking carefully at the grill, it too is slightly different from those I've seen.

Hello,
Well the seller just sent me a few pictures of the inside. Turns out it is not a Credenza or even a Victrola. It is something called a Concert? Perhaps it is English?

I couldn't help but wonder if the proportions were off for a Credenza, as it just didn't look quite right. Judging from the auto stop mechanism, this likely has a Garrard or Collaro motor, and so, presumably may also be English.

Looks kinda neat-it might have a glazed type of finish like a Victor VE-9-54. Metal parts look well made but just catching the edge of the reproducer I cannot tell if its good quality or not.

I don't recognise the turntable controls as either Collaro or Garrard, and sadly the soundbox is no help as it not gold plated and therefore unlikely to be the original. My guess is that the machine is of American origin, as a UK clone would be more likely to copy the HMV Re-Entrant cabinet design than the Credenza.

Whatever it's origin, it is a nice looking machine.

I'm wondering if it isn't a re-branded Player-Tone Sonnet (# 200) model:
