A little biography (and discography with sound examples) about Charles A. Matson, as well as an new and potential line-up of the infamous “Chas. A. Matson´s Creole Serenaders” recording session for Edison 1923.

The personnel of “Chas. A. Matsons Creole Serenaders”
Charles Matson (piano), Leroy Parker (violin), Curtis Moseley (drums - is this the same drummer of Californian fame named Curtis Mosby - as some sources mentioned?)

Other musicians (instrument unknown): Thomas Hilliery (or Hillery), Levi Busch, Carlos Daugherty, Charles (Chas.) O. Moseley, Irving or William Benford, William Escoffery, Irving Arthur.

Anyone of you familiar with the names of the remained musicians? What instrument have they played? Any suggestions is highly welcomed!

After some more research, the members of the Creole Serenaders on Edison DD:
With the first clipping (April 1923) - Irving Benford must be clearly a "misspelling" of William Benford. The second clipping is given the name correct as William Benford. The same with "Irving Arthur" = Julian Arthur.

• Thomas E. “Petey” Hillery (1900 – 1928, active mostly in Baltimore) – cornet

• Levi Bush (* c. 1895, active mostly in Baltimore) – trombone

• Carlos Daugherty (* c. 1896, active mostly in Baltimore) – cl/sax

• Julian Arthur (1896 – 1926) – violin (?) or sax (?)

• Charles O. Moseley (Mosby?) – sax/cl (Had once been suggested for playing with “Mosby´s Dixieland Blowers” in an older issue of the “Storyville Magazine”)

• Leroy Parker - violin (if used with the recording)

• William ‘Splif’ Escoffery – banjo (recorded with June Clark in 1925 and the Gulf Coast Seven)

• William “Bill” Benford – tuba (recorded with Jelly Roll Morton, Thomas Morris, Ethel Waters…)

• Curtis Moseley (Mosby?) – drums

Snow Fis(c)her had been a member of the chorus (dancer).

Shortly after the recording session (summer 1923) Julian Arthur got the job of Chas. A. Matson with the Jimmie Cooper Revue, chanced the personnel and worked with Cooper until his death in 1926.
