I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure this is the bottom half of a wire music stand I could be mistaken, but this looks identical to the most of the wire music stands I've seen.

Don't worry, that's how we learn. I bought one of these when I first started collecting. I got it at a flea market for only $5.00(thank goodness). Then a more experienced collector told me it was the bottom of a music stand.
