Why put the turntable below the horn and accessible on the
side of the cabinet? I'm thinking this may be a modified/re-purposed gramophone cabinet, but I'm not sure.

It might just be genuine if this Perophone Boudoir model is anything to go by. The dealer who sold it described it as a massive investment in furniture for little or no acoustic pleasure. I suppose the side door enabled the owner to sit up in bed and operate the machine.

Many thanks, epigramophone.
The horn looks about the same, as does the molding around the player area. Possibly it came out of the same factory?
I think what threw me was the horn, which to my eyes looked like mid-century blonde Formica instead of veneer. I wonder what kind of wood it is.
I'm also wondering how many records were ruined after they had scraped against the underside of the horn while being changed.
