Japanese Black Lacquer Credenza X

Bought this gutted cabinet of an early VTMCo Credenza X on Phoenix Craigslist on Saturday. Appears to be the work of a Western hand, perhaps one of the small customizing shops. I've already secured a correct donor in a rough cabinet in order to restore it (if anyone is hauling between Michigan and Arizona, please let me know, otherwise it may be August 2017 before I can receive the donor at the APS Show in California).

The left side panel depicts a female ghost or spirit appearing to a cowering man. The right panel shows a man asleep on an opium bed dreaming of a woman. The upper front panel is a man beating a drum while a female watches from a shore or bank. The lower front panels depict a man pulling a woman in a rickshaw toward ships along a shore. There are several things going on upon the lid! Under the lid is a butterfly with a flowering vine. The insides of the horn doors are decorated as well. My wife loves it!

I am a big fan of any and all Japanese Lacquer phonographs and that is one of the most unusual subject matter I have ever seen. There is very little restoration work to be done on the cabinet, it is going to look spectacular. I see that it was an electric motor version, are you going to restore it as such? Great find, I would love to see a post get started with different Japanese Lacquer machines that are in everybodys collection.

The paper sticker on the bottom indicates that it is a Credenza (as opposed to an 8-30, etc.), and was obviously originally equipped with an electric motor, so it was originally fitted with an off-set turntable, notched horn support, etc. The donor machine that I've located is precisely the same configuration as this one was originally including the electric motor.

I saw this on craigslist a while back, but took a pass on it for want of room. I'm glad to see it ended up in capable hands. Congratulations! :D
