Hi all,
the "platter" pin that goes through the top of the main worm drive gear in my victor VV-XI is sheared off. Should I try and get it out or just find a new main worm drive gear?

Tips?

(sorry, I think this was posted in the wrong area.. Admin, please move appropriately)

I'm trying to visualize this. You might have to have a machinist or a clock repairman drill out and replace the pin. When you say platter pin, is that the pin that goes through the spindle shaft that locks the turn table in place? If so,then that is an easy fix. You will need a 1/32" punch to remove the pin. Then I would use a small nail and trim the length with a dremel tool. Then I would use ACC glue to hold in in place. If that is not the pin we are talking about, then my first suggestion will be the logical choice.

Yes, thats it exactly! The pin that passes through the worm gear shaft and locks the turntable in place.

ill fix it when i do the breakdown \ deep clean over my next holiday break. rust and tight fit are keeping it in place now ;-)

Thanks again!

Great, we're on the same page. That's a very common problem and an easy fix. Good luck with the repair. I have done this many times.

That pin is hard, it would be difficult to drill out, and hard to keep the hole straight (if the drill is not perfectly aligned, you could drill the hole off kilter, or a larger diameter). They usually are not too difficult to punch out, even if it appears rusty. I would reserve the drill as a last resort.

I have done that many times when the pin was stuck, and it works great. I never had a problem with it being off kilter or center. The secret is proper alignment.
