I recently bought my first gramophone. I had it serviced last weekend and the spring was replaced as it had gone. It worked beautifully for a few days. Yesterday there started to be be what seems like a grinding feeling when I wind it. It previously wound very smoothly and silently. Now there is a grating sound (like metal against metal), and resistance to being wound. I wonderered if anyone could give me any advice about what the problem could be. I am very grateful for any assistance you can give.

What make and model?

The mechanism is a Garrard Junior. I don't know much else about it.

hello , it's Mike here , take the motor board out and wind it while looking at the motor , you may see what is causing the grinding , could be a loose needle worked its way into the motor , if you can't solve it bring it back for me to look at for you

Thanks Mike. I've been trying to call you, but I haven't been able to get through. I'll do what you suggest and if I don't have any luck I'll bring it up to Portobello tomorrow.

I have been following this thread, and here is my observation. I'm wondering if the crank escutcheon isn't lined up properly. After years of winding, they get loose and some "repairman" didn't align that properly. I have come across many machines with that problem. Check the escutcheon.
