Victor 50 - good deal????

Hello,
I just joined the forum. My phonographic experience is kind of sad - haven't had a 78 rpm turntable for decades

but still have all my records. I can go into details another time, but want to change that. There's a local VV-50 for sale; asking price is $250. Haven't seen it yet, but it's supposed to be original, great condition. Any suggestions on what to look for and if that price is reasonable? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Welcome! In my opinion, $250.00 is on the high side of current prices, so if you're considering this, it should really be in excellent condition. One advantage you have is that it's local and you can inspect it personally.
The wooden case should show little wear. Check to see that there are no splits or separations, especially on the back side. Sometimes the lid would get bent back and crack the back panel.
The hardware should be unrusted with no dents. Original turntable felt should be in good condition. The reproducer should be a Victrola Number Two model, and will likely need new gaskets and adjustment. The windup motor will probably need cleaning and re-greasing, but should run quietly with no turntable wobble.
I find that the short tone arm can accentuate the sound problems of slightly warped or offset-center records, but otherwise the VV-50 is a robust machine with plenty of volume for most uses. It's a good choice for pre-1925 acoustic records, and not as good for the later electrics. What records you have in your collection may determine what'd be best for you. Good Luck!
Bob

OK, finally got a hold of the seller. Turns out he has several things, including a Credenza, along with spare parts. Anyway, verified he wants $250 for the portable. Asked about the Credenza - wants $2000

for it and claims it's in mint condition. He's going to call next week to setup a time when I can have a look. Will keep you posted.

I'd say $2000 is pretty stiff for a Credenza- they're not rare and very good ones can be had for under a grand, especially if you go for playability before appearance. If it is REALLY "Mint" (with the original albums, flawless cabinet, no wear to the plating, undamaged reproducer) that's another thing- but "Mint" is in the opinion of the seller.

Thanks, estott. The fellow doesn't seem very interested in selling the Credenza. He said it's in his storage room surrounded by stuff which he has to clear away so I can just look at it. That's why he needed a week before I could come over. (The portable 50 I could have seen right away.) I'll post an update if he calls next week and if I get to see it.

A VV-50 is a good project. It is the real thing, a Victrola. It has smooth sides to make finish repairs easy. Parts are readily obtainable. They look good and are not demanding in that you can carry them around easily. They are quite old, dating to around 1922, and were designed to fit on the running board of a Model T.
They go for as little as $75 plus shipping on eBay in restorable condition but usually around $140. I seldom see them on craigslist. If the seller "wants $250 for the portable" he won't get it. Pay $150 max and if there is ANY damage like a broken spring or ripped-out back or damaged finish pay much less, if anything. People tell me a lot of crap over the phone but when I show up I can see for myself and I don't like being lied to. The kiss of death for these is rusty handle and corners. You will not be able to soak the rust off without turning them pink. Replating is expensive and looks odd. You won't get replacements without buying a parts machine or paying a bunch of money.
A Credenza these days goes for $500 or less. Be sure to get a wind-up not electric. If the tonearm support is broken as they usually are expect to pay $150 minimum for a replacement. Check bun feet. They are often damaged and their condition affects value. Be sure the top is not scratched and veneer not broken off. It's easy to say I'll fix it someday but someday never comes as my garage full of someday projects can attest. It's a shame to pay hundreds of dollars for something just to put it in the garage and finally sell it off cheap.

While talking of portables- if you have one with a broken or missing handle here is an excellent source:
http://www.brettunsvillage.com/trunks/h ... andles.htm They also have leather replacement grips which attach with buckles and straps- strong and high quality and they don't require you to pry open rings or drill out rivets. The seller ships fast too.
