Broken VV-35

Hey, this is my first post, so hello to the community. Anyways, I was given a VV-35 from an antiques shop owner. When I wound the spring and released the brake, the platter would spin for a few seconds, and then the spring would release all of its tension without transferring it to the gearing. I pulled it open and saw the same thing. In the photo you can see the two exterior parts of the barrel. The top part will spin very fast and then the spring's tension will have been released. If anyone can offer an explanation and/or a fix it would be great.

Thanks, Roland.

Does the spring wind up all the way before you release the brake?

Does the crank spin when the spring suddenly releases?

Is the release accompanied by any whizzing or grinding sound?

Have you wound the motor up while out of the case, so you can see what is happening?

These are a few suggestions to help you narrow down the problem.
