I purchased this machine yesterday, but can't seem to figure out what model it is for certain. I've seem BH and BI which look the same, and I've also seen it referred to as a Sterling. Can anyone help with information regarding the model? Also, the original reproducer is missing. It came with a later screw-on Orthophonic knock-off replacement reproducer. It appears that the three screws that held the original reproducer are still in the arm. I'm in the market for a correct replacement. Any help is much appreciated!

That's a BI, also called the "Sterling."

Thanks for the info George! I love those old ads! Now I have to locate a proper reproducer for this machine. The Orthophonic knock-off is a flaking pot metal and dried out rubber nightmare!

Here is the exact, correct reproducer you need for your BI. The markings are correct for this. Sometimes you have to spend some money to get the right part. Mark is a great guy to deal with. With a special machine like your BI, I strongly suggest you go for it. Besides, How often do see one of these loose for sale?

Thanks Harvey! I actually had that bookmarked and was watching it. The patina even looks about right to twin with the wear on the tone arm. Do you know someone reliable who does spring work? Or where I might get springs to replace the broken one in this machine?

George Vollema, the Victrola Doctor does very good work. It's best to change both springs, not just the broken one. You'll have a really nice machine when you are done.

I purchased this machine very cheaply, so I do have some room for investment in repair. I've always wanted one, and this was a very unexpected find. I didn't have much time to research the machine itself in terms of rarity, etc. I know they were produced beginning around 1906. Is there a good source for information regarding Columbia machines? I know there are some great websites dedicated to Victor Machines (production, rarity, value), but I've never found anything much about Columbia aside from a website that helps identify models. I don't know how rare or valuable this machine is, but I'm gathering that they don't show up very often. I've honestly only ever seen one other disc machine with a horn in person, and I own it as well. It's also a Columbia, but a model BA unmarked contract machine.

The three Disc Graphophones in the ad above (BI, BD and BH) were the first of the tone arm designs offered by the company. They were introduced in September 1905.

The BI sold well, and a good number survive today.

A good source of information on Columbia Disc Graphophones is the Columbia Phonograph Companion Vol. II: Disc Graphophones & Grafonolas by Robert Baumbach. Unfortunately, it's out of print, but used copies show up occasionally.
