Go-Jo question: bare wood ?

I have been using non-abrasive Go-Jo to clean-up some old tools, bench-planes, and such, and have a question.

I know guys here are fond of using GoJo to remove wax, gunk and dirt from furniture finishes, but if there is finish-loss and bare wood is exposed, should we keep the GoJo away from it ?

Will it soak-into the wood and cause problems with future finishing processes ?

Some of the wooden tool handles attached to the planes and saws, received a "hard finish" at the factory (shellac, lacquer, or varnish), which is worn away or been chipped / cracked-off in places... it seemed that the exposed wood really sucked-up the GoJo and turned dark...

Not terribly concerned for a tool handle, but want to be careful when working on fine furniture...

So, bare wood + GoJo = Yes, or No ?

Thanks !

Frank

No to Go-Jo-if you want to clean bare wood, go first with either mineral spirits or turpentine. Then follow-up with wax remover that is sold by many woodworking stores such as Woodcraft. Using those products I have never had a problem with bare wood.

I would vote no, having experienced the sort of darkening of the unfinished wood you're describing.

I would also avoid using it on the oak finishes on some Victors that only have a wax finish without any shellac or varnish on top.

Definitely not!!! The wood will never take the stain/dye right. Then when the Go Jo does dry out the color will be splochy and the finish might even lift.
