Just finished digitizing a nice collection of Portuguese music from vintage 78 rpm records. It is mostly Fado music, a style new to me, and I like it very much! You can listen to the recordings here:

Enjoy!

Wonderful, many thanks! This is one of the great joys of the hobby, isn't it - some unknown record, perhaps a genre you'd never considered or even heard before, unexpectedly stops you in your tracks. That's how I came to Fado too, with a couple of 1930s records of Antonio Menano some years ago.

I discovered fado music as a wet behind the ears student hitchhiking through Europe in 1968-1969, and spending a few glorious days in Lisbon. Oh, to be young again...........

So true. I discovered Peruvian huayño and huaylás in a similar way, from picking up some albums at a goodwill because I just had to know what the people on the cover sounded like! Ever since then I pick up just about anything international I come across, and I've rarely been disappointed (except when they turn out to be spoken-word comedy records in a language I don't understand...)

I picked up a nice collection of Arabic 78s and recorded those. It took a long time listening to them before I could even begin to appreciate the music style.

I to am a fan of Portuguese Fado Music. I have seen Ana Moura perform live twice and it was amazing. I had no idea that vintage Fado records were made. Thank you for posting your great collection. If I ever make to to Portugal, I will be trying to find 78 records like yours. Do they ever come up on Ebay?

Here is a small group of vintage Latin music you might like:

Also some vintage French music:

The French music was primarily recorded from 78 rpm records, though some of it was recorded from French radio transcriptions from the early 1950s.

Enjoy!
