Please Help Me Evaluate This Victor Type M

I saw this Type M in one of my local antique stores today and it has peaked my interest. I know nothing about these earlier Victors so, I would like to ask for your help evaluating it. First of all, it will need to be refinshed as someone did a poor job of it in the past. It may even be coated with poly. Its very shiny. It does play and plays well. The motor winds smoothly, runs quiet, and, there is no speed variation when it is playing. I think the horn as been painted. At least the outside of it. So, here are some pictures. Oh..the seller is asking $1250.00 which I think is too much. You tell me what would be fair if it is worth even pursuing. Thanks

I normally think that a black & brass horn is more appropriate than a black Victor Flower horn. Of course the original owner could have made his machine more "modern" by upgrading the horn. The same is true for the reproducer. An Exhibition is normally the common reproducer but this machine has the Victrola 2. These are not deal breakers for your machine but you should be aware. For the asking price you should be able to buy a Victor M with good original finish with the correct horn and reproducer. If tempted I would offer less, perhaps $900. I hope this helps.

Shouldn't the brake be mounted perpendicular to the turntable?

You can rotate it to where it works but there is either something missing or it is broke.
So, these never came with the flower horn? Has it been modified to accept the flower horn?

The elbow on this machine will hold both types of horns. So not a modification, just a newer horn than would normally be seen on this machine.

Nice horn.
Poorly refinished.
Wrong reproducer.
Brake is broken.
Price too high.
I say pass. Always buy quality, or as much of it as one can afford. (Not that I do that, but it's a good credo anyway.)

Agreed. Thanks!
