Here's a nice Edison Model B reproducer- the first iteration of this type without the "MODEL B" nomenclature embossed in the weight. Although the pictures are blurry, the stylus looks unworn and it plays well to my very tin ear where cylinders are concerned. S-N 27040. If my research is right this is proper for the very last two clip suitcases, 4- clip suitcases, and early new style Edison machines from about 1900-1902. Don't hold me to it. Diaphragm is clear and could be glass or mica. I really don't want to take it apart to find out. Limiter loop has a small repaired break at one end which has broken again as shown. This doesn't affect operation and the limiter still limits just fine.

I have one of the last Standard Model-A Square Top machines serial #S42869. This machine was produced during the last month of production. I only know of one other with a higher serial number. It has its original late model Automatic reproducer. The late Automatic differed from the early models in that it had a limit pin and limit loop rather that the limit screw. The Model-B reproducer came out in 1902 a year after the Standard Model-B was introduced.

And yet I have one of Shawn's reprints, "setting up and operating the STANDARD Edison phonograph" that shows only the two clip standard, but showing the Model C reproducer and the "new" Edison recorder.

Not being an expert on these what I'm finding appears to be all over the map with these early machines. In fact, everything I've found seems to indicate that the Automatic was actually an upgrade for two- clip machines.

So is the B era- correct for Tom's machine, or not?

I was looking at Martinolas spread sheet on standards and the two/four clips had a variety of reproducers that possibly were a add on later??? I am buying a automatic which will go on a two clip and the winged B will probably go on a four clip... I will have to slow down on reproducers for a while. Where does a nonwinged B go on???? Does it go on a new style early A??? Tom B

Good, I'm not the only one sort of confused by all this conflicting info, then. This B actually came on my two- clip and I was lucky as hell- and also now much poorer, LOL- to have a forum member hook me up with a pristine and correct Standard Speaker for my 2 clip, which is why I put the B up for sale.

Interesting that the Edison setup guide for the two clip shows a Model C and a "new" recorder. Then again, who didn't want to try to "upsell" in those days?

When the Standard Model-A was introduced in February 1898 it came with a Standard Speaker. Later in production the Standard Speaker was replaced with the Automatic Reproducer. In 1901 Edison introduced the New Style case Standard Model-A. In 1902 both the Model-B and Model-C reproducers were introduced. So how could a Standard Square Top produced prior to 1901 have a Model-C reproducer? Standard Square Top machines never came from the factory with a Model-B. Yet you will find machines with all types of reproducers that were swapped out later on.

Originally, the reproducer would have been the “Automatic”. On the later incarnations of this model, one sometimes finds it equipped with the “Model B” reproducer. Today one often sees these machines with the slightly later “Model C” reproducer.

Not only is it said that "on later incarnations of this model" (4-clip) "one sometimes finds it equipped with the 'model B' reproducer", It then says the Model C was made slightly later.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger. If tomb has doubts he can just PM me to cancel the sale. I think the Spotter's Guide is pretty authoritative, though.

And, as far as the Model C info- don't ask ME, ask whomever at the National Phonograph Company made the brochure!

no tickey no Landry no cancel. I might send it to India and they may convert it to a standard reproducer or a Stan- B. That will fit any oldie Tom B
