Can anyone explain the relevance of this Gramophone T-Shirt?

As I get older, I think I'm living in an alternate universe with a different concept of reality, which has me questioning my sanity....

"Neutral Milk Hotel was an American indie rock band formed in Ruston, Louisiana by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Jeff Mangum in the late 1980s. The band is noted for its experimental sound, abstract lyrics and eclectic instrumentation."

Thanks for the explanation, which still leaves me mystified by the origin of the name and the flying gramophone logo (which has nothing to do with milk, neutral or a hotel)... I guess meth or heroin would help make it more relevant...
Needless to say, they must not have been very popular, since I never heard of them... Of course I have been living in my cave, trying to avoid whatever the perceived "real" world is...

Neutral Milk Hotel was actually one of the best indie bands to come out of the 90's, and they still have a pretty large following. The "artwork" on that t-shirt is a piss poor reproduction of the original NMH graphic, which appears below.

I still don't get the significance of a winged front mount phonograph. It doesn't make any sense to me.

If I was going to name a band, I would choose something that made more sense, like:
1st Gear
Cheese
Asylum
The logo would be a submarine with a jukebox on top, instead of a conning tower...
Who thinks up these names and WHY? This alternate reality universe we live in is really getting weird... I think I'll go see what the Kardashians are up to...

I looked at this crazy picture again. I can't find the propeller!!!! Or maybe there is a jet engine somewhere that I didn't see.

For me, no explanation about the graphic is needed. It fits into my reality and tickles my artistic senses.

James,
I can appreciate the bizarre artistic sense of wacky ideas, like the stainless steel phonograph lady, or the record "turntable" you pictured, etc... I think I'm just trying to make some sense of a world that used to seem sensible...
