It is strange to me that the pivot box area is black and is lacking the beautiful nickel
finish the rest of the reproducer has. Can anyone explain. Thanks.

The one on eBay looks the same as mine (see pic). I thought they were all that way...

I have a golden brass orthophonic and the needle bar box is also black - I think all the brass orthophonics were made like that. The later pot metal ones had the golden needle bar box.

Isn't the needle bar "box" a separate piece on the brass ones but cast in on the pot metal ones, or am I not recalling correctly?

That's correct, the pot metal needle bar boxes are integral to the body of the soundbox, but not so on the brass ones.
