FIVE 8-12s Lined up and Shipping Out

Rare line up of 5 required a photo. Note the varieties of the 8-12s: wood of Mahogany and Walnut, the windup and electric motor, as well as gold and gun-metal plating. I have recently sold and am freight shipping 2 of them and delivering the other 3 on the way to the Wayne NJ Show.

Unlike larger Victrolas (such as the Credenza 2-door shown in the foreground on the pallet), I lay the 8-12 on it's back when shipping on a pallet. It's completely wrapped with 2" of styrofoam and is bolted down to the pallet thru a wood adapter to the cabinet's 4 underside threaded holes, then strapped down over the styrofoam and cardboard. I don't have a pallet lifter to move the pallets, but do have a handy dandy lift (by http://www.Vestil.com) to move the machines around (as seen in the background of another photo below). I only meant to sell 4, but 5 went. I suppose if you own five 8-12s for about 5 years, that would be equivalent to 25 years of owning one, right? With only this logic, I am at peace with being 8-12 free. I suppose my logic and peace for letting go all four of my Credenza 2-door machines, is that I'm not letting go of my 8-60s. Wish I got a picture of the 2-door line up of 4. Also note the hold down method for the Credenza to the pallet in the fore ground and the palletized 8-12s, on their backs, are in the back ground. Last note, pictures are in reverse order.

BTW, freight from FL to CA for 3 Victrolas on 3 pallets was only $700.

It's like a showroom! Beautiful machines. I must say I am a big fan of the 8-12 (but have yet to own one). I really like the cabinet and it matches a lot of the furniture in my house.

Impressive display!

Never understood why Victor felt a need to switch from that lighter satin-finished (walnut?) cabinet to the very dark finishes late in the production. Was this to obscure lesser-grade wood parts or merely accommodating changing tastes of the day? To my eyes, the French-influenced styling was more appropriate in the lighter wood with gilded parts.

This post brings to mind a photo (posted on a previous phonograph collector board) of a line-up of Credenzas sitting in a grassy yard. That, too, made for a mighty impressive display.

I have to repeat again, that is an impressive display of some beautiful Orthophonic machines! I think one thing that makes them impressive is that they are all the same models, 8-12s. You're like a 21st century Victrola dealer. I know Uncle Vanya has told me over ten years ago that his favorite style of Orthophonic was the 8-12. Now I see his point. A symphony in walnut and mahogany! I also have to ask who is your shipper?

That seems like a good price, but I guess you get a discount for bulk shipping?

I use FreightCenter.com to get a list of quotes and this time Clear Lane was the cheapest by at least $400. The $700 price for the 3 machies includes insurance ($50). The price went up about only $50 per machine. Bulk shipments are the way to go.

It does pain me that I sold my 5th and last 8-12. I have always enjoyed the large but more compacted nature of this machine and have felt it is a natural positioned next to the VE 9-25 (for now it's just another VE 9-25).

The 8-12 was the very first phonograph I bought in 1981. It is the one that got this whole crazy hobby/obsession started for me. I sold the 8-12 almost 25 years ago though. Fortunately, I was able to get another real nice one at the last Donley auction. It has the gold plated hardware and plays great.
