finally got warp out of the base board. It took a week of wetting and weighing it down. final straightening came when it was reattached to base. The finish came off but was reapplied with some orange shellac .

Ah, a VW guy. I would have combined both hobbies by using the tire of the Type 14 to straighten the baseboard. :D

What year? '73? convertible or coupe?

Great job! Looks like a perfect match on the finish too. Steam works really well for bending wood. My wife has a steamer for removing wrinkles in clothing that I use. I recently straightened a bowed cabinet top using it. I clamp the wood to apply pressure in the opposite direction of the bow. After a couple of days when the wood is dry, I unclamp it. At this point it will have a slight back-bow. After another couple of days to relax the fibers in the wood, it is nice and flat and ready for finish. Anytime you are trying to bend wood, you want the finish to be completely removed. Just dont try this with veneers or laminates.
