Noisy Gear - Edison Standard. Need some advice

What do you guys do quieten down the small gear on the end of the governor where it meshes with the brass gear? This thing sounds like there is a bee in the case. Ive tried every conceivable lubricant that I can think of. I also tried adjusting the position of the small gear to the brass gear. No luck. On my other Standard Edison, all I had to do was put a dab of wheel bearing grease there and it is quiet as mouse. Any ideas?

The governor shaft gears on Edisons can really hum if they are the least bit buggered up. I had a maroon GEM that sounded like bees-- I bought a new shaft from Ron Sitko-- problem was solved. On your Standard, I'd try removing the shaft from the machine-- remove the weights/springs and, using a tiny file, dress each of the teeth of the gear. That may help-- but if the gear is worn, a good original shaft or a new repro one will likely solve your problem.

Ok Thanks! I would have thought that the brass gear would be the one to wear first. I'll look for another governor shaft.

One tiny drop of STP oil treatment on that noisy gear
will shut it completely up for quite a while.
At one time I kept a small eyedropper bottle handy
that had STP in it, for just that purpose.
That governor pinion, plus the 2-minute selector gear
on my Edison Model D combination 2/4 minute machine
do make a bit of noise.
Nice fairly thick oil such as 20W50 motor oil quiets them
up some. But do try the STP if you want it dead quiet.

I would just call Ron Sitko and see what he has in stock. I should think he stocks those governor shafts. With the amount of tooth wear that yours is showing, nothing but replacement will cure it.
As I tried to post this I saw Chuck's comment. Try the STP and see how it works. I may get some and try it on my noisy Home A.
