It is more for aesthetics and looks. The machine will still play without it. They are scarce and rarely ever come up for sale. Unfortunately, I don't know of any reproductions being made. I bought one a few years ago, after searching for a long time. I paid $200.00 for mine including shipping. There are two types of rings. The early one for the BI has a solid bottom. The later ones have a notch for the speed control lever. Make sure you get the right one.

I don't know if this is still available. It was recently on eBay. It said "ended" but not "sold".

And Harvey is 100% correct. The original did not have a slot for the speed control. The slotted ones were for a Grafonola, not an outside horn machine like the BI. I believe the turntable diameter was different as well. i.e., not exactly 10".

I looked for a 12" ring for my BD for many years. Finally got one last year due to the kindness of Jerry B. on this forum. It may be cosmetic, a beauty ring, but it makes a big difference in the appearance of the machine.

Actually, the slotted ones were for the later horn machines such as the BNW, BNWM, BII, and sometimes the BN. These machines had the speed control lever on the motor board. The slot accommodated the lever.The turn table was 10 " in diameter. The BD and BY had a 12" turntable.The only Grafonolas that I know of that had the beauty ring was the Ideal? (10"), The Regal, Alhambra,and Elite(12"). If I am missing any, let me know. I wonder if a clock bezel will work?
