I'm working on my first Edison Standard model F cylinder phonograph and it has a crossed out D then F stamped on the ID plate. Never seen that before (I've led a sheltered life). Also came with an Edison Model S reproducer that plays both 4 and 2 minute cylinders.

So the only difference between a Standard Model D and Model F is the reproducer carriage, the Model S reproducer, and the Cygnet horn as standard equipment..??

I don't have my book with me right now, but yes I believe that is the only difference. Of course being 2 and 4 min, but that's a given.

Edison made the plate that is used for the model C adaptable to other models. All the holes in the plate will take the different gearing.. The only difference between the C plate and the D E F plate is the two screw holes in the C plate for the gear cover. He then changed the carriages on the model E ( from the model D ) made it so you can not shift it for 2 and 4 minute cylinders and only use 4 minute ones with a larger reproducer such as a N or diamond B.. The F I/D plate was a reused D plate as Edison was one who did not want to waste anything otherwise known as a tightwad. I added the tightwad remark. He used all stock up. Your F is a standard D with a horizontal carriage.. It will take any standard part model C and up. It came standard with a S Reproducer and a cygnet horn. They are a rarer machine and well worth keeping and fixing it up if it needs it. I like mine and it is a loud machine that plays well. It is a work horse. Tom B

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately, this is not mine. I am merely replacing the mandrel shaft bushing, adding a new belt, and installing a new spring for the owner. Also cleaning and tuning it up. A lot of fun!

What belt are you using? I put a rubber belt on my GEM model B and it keeps going to the side and binding up on the tensioner and it just doesn't work like it does when it's routed right. Not sure what to do.

I get ¼" leather belt material from Ron Sitko then make them as needed. If you have a rubber belt, you shouldn't need a belt tensioner. If it keeps going to the side, it might be caused by the 2 belt pulleys not being properly aligned. They should be directly in line with each other. If the belt pulleys are correctly aligned and it still won't stay on track, try taking the belt off and turn it around 180 degrees then reinstall and see what happens. Sometimes this will fix it.

Thanks I'll try that! It seemed to have run better when the tensioner was on, didn't have to help to start etc. Ima check out alignment then flip it and see what happens.

The spring in this motor only played at speed for about 5 ½ minutes before it started slowing down so I installed a new spring and it now plays about 11 minutes before rewinding. It is also the quietest Standard I have ever seen. Wish it was mine...
