That first 'toon sounds like the stories of hardship used to make kids feel guilty about their privileged lives... "You kids have it too easy, you don't know what hardship is. Back in the old days, I had to walk seventy miles to school barefoot in the winter, leading a cow, while recovering from stab wounds inflicted by my stepdad for not doing my chores on time."

I think these cartoons exemplify how America was the land of opportunity, where folks from even the humblest beginnings could rise to prominence through hard work and perseverance.
