New Victor VV-100 and Forum Newbie!

Hi All,

I just want to introduce myself. I'm a newbie to this forum and also to the "Talking Machine" world. I have always loved music and collectables, and by combining the two, these machines caught my interest.

I just purchased my first Victrola, a 1924 VV-100 (see pictures below) for $175, which for the condition it's in, I thought was a great deal. Whether it was such a good deal or not is probably up for debate, but regardless I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

I find myself coming home from work and playing a few records every night (using a new needle for each side of course! :) )

So far, it's running great, aside from a few times it slowed for a for seconds and then regained speed (which could obviously be the record itself).

I hope to be an active member, and if I decide to possibly do some work on it, I'll definitely be asking tons of questions!

Matt

Welcome! That is a terrific looking machine! I would have paid $175.00 for it myself. Enjoy that beauty!

Matt,
Welcome to the Forum and congrats on the new phonograph. It looks great. Don't hesitate to post questions to members here. There is a wealth of knowledge available from members of this Forum. Where are you located? I wonder if your machine is slowing every now and then due to dried out grease in the spring barrel.

Hi Matt,

Welcome to the Forum. It's a friendly place and you should participate and enjoy yourself very much. Your machine looks great. It has the great Victrola styling.

That's a nice looking machine. You don't see those around here very often with the larger horn and the dashpot for the lid to close with. Well good luck with your collecting. It's a fascinating hobby, that's for sure.

Welcome to the forum! There is a lot of great music out there but some is a little obscure and hard to find. And you have to know what you are looking for. Maybe one of our hard core members lives nearby and you will be able to visit. I love the early machines for design but love the 1925-1930 machines for their sound and the music that you can play on them. Are your musical interest more classical or popular??

Ken, I'm in the Philadelphia area. I've heard that is a possibility regarding the grease. I actually had to fool with the speed control to get it to stay consistent. I wonder if it may have to do that not being set properly.

I definitely like both. My machine came with a few albums (some classical and some popular- Big Bang, Sintra, etc.). They are a mix of 12" and 10", but I have read that I shouldn't really play anything newer than 1935 on my machine since it will wear the record down quickly. Is that accurate?

Opinions on the subject of "what to play" are variable here. Personally, I keep my machines stocked with era-appropriate discs and play only those on them.
