This is a Craigslist item, and while I don't imagine anyone reading this in the UK is going to pop over to Arizona to look at it, I was intrigued by the design as well as the similarity of the tonearm to the Columbias, reminiscent of the Plano-Reflex type. I understand, from the CLPGS web site, that the Academy brand was purchased by Columbia at some point in their history. I'm amazed at the horn opening. Is it possible that the horn was that large, or was this just a large Art Deco cutout? I do like it though. Anybody ever heard one play, and if so, how was it? Cheers! The components are good quality, with a Garrard motor, Academy soundbox and a nice needle dispenser, but the whole thing is let down by the cheap, varnished plywood cabinet.

A fair amount of their grilles incorporated the letter "A"
