What's With The Drip-Drawer On This Sonora?

I was browsing Ebay when I came across this Sonora console. Not a particularly nice machine, but the drip-drawer, identical to the ones of cylinder phonographs stuck out.

Was this stock, or just an odd user implemented needle storage box?

If it is a re-purposing, what machine do you suppose it came from?

That's not a "drip drawer" (and neither were the similar drawers on Edison Concerts and Spring Motors).

The Sonora's drawer was meant to hold whichever sound box was not being used (lateral or vertical), plus packs of needles, record brush, etc.

We have a similar drawer on our Sonora console. Ours is a different model, but looks like it is original and that machine (on e-bay) is missing the record sleeves that should be built in to the side compartments.
Also note that ours has an extra compartment below the drawer, and we have yet to figure out its purpose.
Thanks to all those with greater knowledge and the willingness to share it!

Yes, thank you. Please excuse my complete lack of knowledge about cylinder machines. You learn a little everyday, right?

Yes - that's the ideal. :) The hobby wouldn't be nearly as much fun for me if there weren't more to discover and learn.

That additional panel is the cover for the battery compartment.

You have a Sonoradio, a very early combination radio-phonograph. There would have originally been either an RCA Radiola IX under the left lid panel.
