Check out this Sony PS-FL99 I just got off the 'bay. Fully automatic, scans tracks, programmable, random... pretty cool I think.

Pretty cool! I used to have a Technics turntable that worked the same. The advantage of the tonearm being attached to the cover and moving in a straight line is that the angle of stylus vs record is always the same, thus minimising any tracking errors. The big disadvantage (in my case) was that it was a very delicate mechanism. I accidentally brushed against the stylus with my hand while attempting to remove some dust from the inside of the cover, and I ruined it immediately. A new stylus (standard lp stylus) was like $ 150, and since I got the turntable for free (and it had no 78 rpm capacity anyways) it was banned to the attic, I don't know if it is still there.

Speaking of stylus replacement, that unit looks like it takes a P-mount cartridge, which don't seem to be sold much these days. Better get them while you can, standard mount carts are pretty much it nowadays.

I’m interested in this also, and we were talking about that here (again). I’ve never heard of the brand from that eBay listing; I was looking mostly at either Stanton or Numark.

I’m more interested in having S/PDIF, rather than USB, because my computers (and stereo) have that digital input, and I think it would provide better quality.

I’d like to have a go at doing transfers, one of these days.

I don't think there is anything special about that player other than it having a USB out.

I agree with what MordEth said about rather going to an actual sound card than a USB port. ...may as well use the medium that was designed for sound, not "universal".

I'm not an expert on the issue, though. LOL, The few 78s I've tried to record, I've done on a "vintage" Audiotronics player. Those old Audiotronics / Califone players with a quarter-inch output to the mini-jack input of my sound card... from that point it depends on the software you're using.
