what is the function of the rod with the wheel that sort of rides on the feed screw on the rear of the carriage of my fireside.

I always thought that it protects the half nut and bar by limiting the vertical movement of the carriage. Others?

Mine may need adjustment as the wheel doesn't ride exactly on the feed screw. At any rate it doesn't seem that it would do the feed screw any good. Is this device used on other Edison machines?

I don't think it rides on the feed screw. It's a gentle way to protect both the feed screw and half nut and bar from incidental contact when the carriage is lifted.

Jerry is correct. It limits the amount the carriage can be raised to prevent the back side of the half nut from making contact with the cylinder.
