I was considering cleaning and oiling my VV-IX-A. The Victor-Victrola pages, http://www.victor-victrola.com/Repair.htm, mention that to pull the motorboard up, you just need to remove the soundbox and push aside the tone arm.

However, I'm concerned that since the tone arm seems to cross on top of the motorboard that it needs removed, like shown in this image of my Victrola:

I saw on a similar page here, http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... 1&start=10, that there are ball bearings underneath the tone arm, so removing it might cause more pieces to pop out than I'm ready to deal with.

My question is: Is it necessary to remove the tone arm to pull the motorboard up? Or can I simply loosen the two holding screws and pull it up?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I'd just like to expose the motor as simply as possible, removing as few pieces as I can.

Not a stupid question at all! You will be able to lift the motorboard up, and it should rest on a support so you can do simple lubrication. Be sure the brake yolk is swung far left so it won't catch on the back frame as you pull the motorboard up. No need to remove the tonearm.
Remove the turntable too, and then you'll see what needs to clear the back before you go further.

Thanks! That was my second question!

Should both the brake yolk and the brake be turned to the left? I've noticed there's a brake knob (I assume the yolk?) at 12 O'Clock and another brake at almost 2 O'Clock.

I believe the piece looks like this:

What I call the yoke is the piece at 12 o'clock, and can be moved to the left in order for the motorboard to clear without bending it. The brake lever stays where it is. When you replace the turntable, move the brake lever to the right to have the leather brake pad clear the turntable rim as it slides on. The turntable will settle in place in half-a-rotation or less.
