Not exactly an Ortho knockoff, the Academy was an inexpensive English make (maybe an HMV knockoff) and these are typical of the UK machines that used to arrive over here in container loads of old furnishings.
A Pathé "Elf"- not bad for the price and very nice if it has a converter to play lateral discs on it.

US buyers used to like these because of the oak cases- by the 20's most US makers were using walnut or brown mahogany. (Many UK collectors regard machines like this as a source of motor parts and firewood.)

However I notice the compressing nit to hold the stylus is gone and has been replaced by a set screw.

That looks to have started out with the Ultona tonearm, but somewhere along the line, a Brunswick acoustic Panatrope tonearm and sound box were substituted. The price would be worth it just for those two components; the rest of the machine as a throw-in.

Ahh now that I take another look, I do see the little Pathé rooster (?) logo on the reproducer.

And the more I look at the pictures the more I see wrong with it. I wouldn't buy without a lot more information, which I don't think the seller can provide.

I guess every major port city must bring in lots of those Academy-type machines (or often gutted cabinets- I guess to save on weight). They are usually really thin wood and I would not recommend them.
Steve (in Houston, TX where many show up)

Here's Christopher Proudfoot's summing up of Academy: Brand name of the Johnson Talking Machine Co. of Liverpool and Birmingham. One of the more popular brands throughout the 1920's. Medium quality with bought-in motors and soundboxes, and there are few features of note.
