You shouldn't play a Pathé record with either of these, unless you have a 78 adapter that can bet set to vertical reproduction, and a Pathé sapphire ball stylus.

You need to have an adapter that is designed to play vertical cuts. Some of the lateral adapters have a swivel joint to allow the reproducer to swivel, but not all of them. Here's a thread about one such reproducer I own:

Of course, you'll also need a Pathé stylus to play vertical cut Pathé discs.

Yes my adapter swivels.

Is this what you are talking about: http://www.phonographs.org/store/n-119- ... p-161.html

Then, all you need is a sapphire ball stylus to play them...

That depends on whether they are later, outside-start records, or the earlier, inside-start ones.

The latter will not work on an Edison, as the feedscrew must be engaged to play records.

With an adapter you do not need to engage the feedscrew to play records- The tracking won't be very good, but with a vertical cut disc tracking error is less of a problem

how do you determine the outside-start records, from the earlier, inside-start ones?

In general, If it has the pressed-in title (no paper label) and the titling is in French, it is center start.
