Edison Triumph Carriage Shaft with Spiral Groove?

I have recently acquired an Edison Triumph upper works in a box of phonograph parts and it has a carriage shaft with a spiral groove in it. Since the shaft doesn't rotate, I'm unable figure out what purpose the groove serves. Is there a reason for the groove? Apparently, not all Triumph carriage shafts have this groove.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like part of the repeater attachment to me

I assume your talking about the shaft like this one on my Triumph Model-E.

That's the one, the works I just got are exactly like yours, except no reproducer. How does it work? That shaft does not rotate, right?

The groove in the carriage shaft is just there to hold oil. The carriage shaft in my Triumph model B doesn't have the groove so it must have been something they started later, maybe in the D series.

The later Edison Triumphs have the spiral groove cut into the carriage shaft. I have eight Triumphs and I presume the spiral cut enhances the distribution of any lubricant applied to the shaft.

Here are a couple pictures of the one I got. Needs cleaning, but looks pretty good otherwise.

Someone removed the ID plate but it's definitely a model D or later top works with 2/4 minute gearing and no end gate. Looks like someone replaced the mandrel shaft bearing too! Good!
