It was a Victor term and should only apply to machines from that company.

LOL, well we certainly know that... but then you get into the debate of helping craigslist sellers. I've had experiences where people have been thankful for non-solicited "corrective" information, but generally I would imagine you would just get ignored or a negative response. Not every copy machine is a Xerox and not every tissue is a Kleenex.

The word 'hoover' has become a generic term for vacuum cleaners in general and even a verb when used as 'to hoover', in some instances. Only HOOVER appliances should, correctly speaking, ever be called that.

Steve: you are correct but Victrola has been used as a generic noun for nearly a century. I myself don't mind- if I search "Victrola" on Craigslist I'm going to find most of the antique machines listed. Otherwise I'd have to search for "Old record player", "Wind Up Record Player", "Old Edison with rolls", "Antique record cabinet" etc, etc. If you told them that their HMV 109 is a Gramophone they'd probably call is an "RCA gramophone"

nice finds dean. and even the prices, aside from a couple, aren't bad... that Pathé is pretty nice, walnut, and in one of their art cases I think... if that was closer, I'd be thinking seriously of breaking my no buy vow. and those brunswicks also seem cheap for what you're getting... the 8-35 has the original albums as well, but at that price I think you're paying for it. beyond that, I just don't get the costliness of those wicker cabinets... I get that they're uncommon, fragile in some ways, but the sound can't be great, and the hardware is pot metal on most, right?

With a Wicker machine (especially Heywood-Wakefield) the cabinet is everything.

Looking at that Silvertone with the replacement grille: there must have been some sort of manufacturing flaw in the grilles for those oak table models- it is very common to find them falling apart or missing completely while the rest of the machine is in fine shape. It doesn't happen to the floor models nearly as often.

From my perspective, there is alot of stuff that comes up on craigslist very cheap in good condition. Of course you will always also from time to time run into the $2,000 Victrola XI with legs cut off etcetera.

I am not too big on Grafonolas, but I would make an exception in this case. Gold hardware and I love the finish!

I agree, usually Columbia's seem boring to me... I think the tonearm is ugly as well. (Just my opinion) ...but yeah, this one is a beauty... perhaps behind those doors are the push button record cabinet slots? Not sure.
