Looks like genuine art noveau, though gone a bit wild. I've seen other pieces of furniture in similar style at a museum.

Thanks, now I’m going to have disturbing mental images of some nonexistent day when I might be assailed with commercials for ‘
Phonographs Gone Wild’.
It still baffles me who would think that making a machine look like this was a good idea...but I suppose there are no shortage of people who really could use some taste.
