I just picked up a Vic V. One odd thing is that the back bracket does not have the screw to hold the horn elbow in place. Was this a variant on the V's? Serial 55543 I

It is a late Vic V not really a variant, simply a design change. What you have is referred to as a "Slip In" elbow. A proper horn is hard to find because the rivet is on top of your elbow which causes the vast majority of horns will end up with Nipper upside down and on the Wrong side. I hope yours came with the right horn. Proper horns with the mushroom top rivet can be found but the are hard to come by. John

Would a Schoolhouse oak horn have the rivet on top for this kind of elbow? They seem to show up now and then. I have never seen a brass bell or petaled horn with the rivet on top.

That is the right rivet but I am fairly certain the diameter of the narrow end of a schoolhouse horn is larger than a V but I could be mistaken on that. Other slip in elbow rear mount Victors (I, II, III, IV?) DO NOT have the elbow slot on top so a Victor horn is easy. The V is the tough one. I have a proper Metal 24" Victor MG on my Mahogany V which has slip in elbow. If I were the owner I would consider third party painted flower horn or Mega Fiber horn or a Don Gfell wood horn and have him orient the decal in the correct (for this elbow) position. Or any horn for now because you have to have something! John

I’ve seen a lot of spear-tip wood horns with loose end caps. Couldn’t one just rotate the cap and glue into the correct position?

Great information! Thank you all! I have a Mahogany spear tip I wanted to put on just until I can figure out what to do in the long term. I know it will be two tone, but better than nothing. So is there any way to fit that mahogany onto this machine leaving out the position of the decal.

And no... it did not come with a horn. But for $100 I couldnt really say no ;o).

It's difficult to judge size from a photo but your Victor V looks really massive. Of course all Victor Vs were massive but they got slightly bigger with time. I bet yours is a little bigger than the more common and earlier examples. What are the dimensions?

Great question... I will measure it when I get home. And I agree the elbow seems huge.... I might have to look for a oak and not fool with the mahogany.

filthy, but NICE... those late version V's are great, I used to have one (and it had an original black petal horn, so they do exist). and yes, they're definitely a bit larger than any of the other earlier versions.
