After hearing a couple of different pronunciations, I'm wondering what the correct pronunciation of Viva-Tonal is....

Obviously no one knows for sure any more, but "Veeva" just sounds right to me.

Good question. I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I suspect it was pronounced as in "vibrant". The other pronunciations are more "european" which wouldn't have been in vogue in the late 1920s in the Yew-nited States of Murka, dontcha know. Words such as "vivacious", "vital" and others clearly favored the long "i" sound in this country back in those days, even though they were derived from european languages where they were pronounced differently. The vowel "i" was almost always pronounced either as the long sound or as the short shound as in "kibble". The long "e" sound for the letter "i" was seldom heard and was considered pretentious. Middle Murkans back then were proud of their flat midwestern twang and their Murkanism, and didn't have the euro pretentiousness that we exhibit today.

The term comes from Latin, so it is properly pronounced 'veeva', like the 'i' in 'Regina'. you wouldn't rhyme 'Regina' with 'vagina', at least the colloquial pronunciation. In Latin, it would be pronounced 'vageena' with a hard 'g'.

I've never heard it pronounced any other way.

Oh, and the 'v' would be prounounced like a 'w' in Latin.

'Weewa-tonal'? Lol!

So if the "V" is pronounced as a "W", then it wouldn't be 'vageena' either. It would be 'wageena'.

J/k, I agree with Veeva-tonal. :D

Hi Shane:

Here's a video in which one of the alternate pronunciations is heard -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV7QU2zbrwQ (Also a great chance to hear the seldom seen Model 810!)

I've always pronounced it "Veeva," but have heard other pronunciations over the years. I guess it really doesn't matter, but it's one of the things I've wondered about.... Not as cut and dry as "Ortho," unless, of course, one pronounces it "Orto." :?
