XI Tabletop

Thanks to mattrx, I was able to purchase this painted VV-XI Tabletop machine. It looks to be in good shape and the paint is coming off fairly easily. The motor doesn't run but I can surely fix that. The grain is oak, which is a total bonus. Hoping I can get this baby back up to speed.
And quick question, can anyone tell the oak variety by the portion I've stripped here?

I was wondering what are your plans for the Victrola decal?
Will you be using a Greg Cline decal?

Miraculously, it's more or less still there. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to salvage it, but if not Gregg Cline all the way.

I think that you would have had more competition if anyone thought that it was Oak. Nice find and good luck with the refurbishing. Please take lots of pictures as the machine is brought back to it's original glory.

I agree! I’m glad I got it for what I did. I’m going to apply a bit of stripper tomorrow and see how much of this paint I can get off. I might even consider applying a coat of wax afterwards to tide me over until I have the guts to tackle a true shellac finish on this beauty.

You might want to try some acetone before stripper. If the paint is latex it will remove the paint and leave the original finish.

That's probably a good idea, I'll give it a try. Not sure how much original finish is left though. See the attached picture. I was able to strip the side with a little steel wool and sandpaper BUT I might've gone a bit far in places as you can probably see, so I'll most likely be committed to a refinish :/. After I cleaned up this side, I began to lean toward fumed oak. Anyone have a pro opinion?

That oak grain is really beautiful. It just amazes me that someone thought painting it would be an improvement.
