Spring direction

Guys,
The Victor III is giving me more trouble than a phonograph has ever been. I bought two brand-new springs, installed them, and...no joy. Won't even wind up.
In the barrel farthest from the spindle drive gear, does the spring wind clockwise or counterclockwise if you look down into the barrel?
Please let me know, before this thing gets the better of me. It's a pain (but it is looking very pretty cosmetically.)
