This doesn't look right

What
is this? Was this an oversight on Victor's part that actually left the factory like this? Was it a Victrola IV "converted" to an external horn unit? I have never seen a Victor I that not only had the ID tag on the
left side of the cabinet, but a motorboard that is hinged so it opens
backwards!

Defiantly something wrong about this, look at the crank, it should be farther back. Looks like the horn bracket and everything was installed on the wrong side. No screw holes in the right side of the cabinet, so maybe it did leave the factory like this?

Yeah. . . maybe I should have done a bit more research before posting
Guess I'll leave it to the professionals to speculate about victor machines!

Don't worry about it... I think the odd placement of the ID tag and the seemingly backward design of the top board and its release, etc. were holdovers from the front mount era. Even though the Victor I was designed from the beginning as a rear mount machine these features seem odd. It does make collecting more interesting.

There's an earlier version of the Victor I with the same odd attributes in this article:
https://www.antiquephono.org/encounteri ... onographs/
The first Victor I was actually based on the Victor Royal, and the earliest were equipped with rigid arms.
This later (ca. 1905) example (the same as pictured in the article referenced above) has an 8-inch turntable with a beveled underside and corresponding brake:
The data plate is mounted opposite the crank side as on the eBay example. The horn is earlier, and is actually the larger size usually found on the Victor II, but with an adapter so it could be used with a Victor I.

Well, thanks! I bought that Victor I in August 1972, from an old fellow who collected music boxes and looked upon antique phonographs as bottom-feeding material. He had this one in a flimsy shed out behind his house. Like you, I wanted to buy it...even though it didn't look quite this good at the time!

And BTW I like the reference to Ayn Rand's "Atlas shrugged" in your avatar.
Great read!
