Does anyone know if the furniture maker Stickley made phonograph cases? They would likely have been floor models. Does anyone have an example of a mission style phonograph? Thanks

I used to have an extensive collection of Arts & Crafts period furniture and other objects and lighting when I lived in a 1911 bungalow in Sierra Madre, California. At that time, I had an Edison Amberola IV which is a rather awkward and late A&C design, and I also had a 'school house' Orthophonic 8-7 that is in sort of a A&C by default case. To my knowledge, no major A&C designer produced a phonograph, but it is possible that one may surface as custom orders were not uncommon. I HAVE seen numerous A&C-styled upright pianos.

Gustav Stickley/Craftsnan never made phonographs, nor did his brothers' companies (Stickley Bros., L & J G Stickley, or Charles Stickley). However, Gus did make a player piano which is a gorgeous piece of A&C. However, as we all know Edison made two (the short lived Amberola IV and the Diamond Disc A 60).

I collect Arts & Crafts and am the proud owner of two machines very much in the A & C or Mission style. Both are pre-cursors to the Puritan in that they were make by the company that later became Puritan. That company was known as United Phonographs and was owned by the Wisconsin Chair Co. which also had a smaller firm called Lakeside Craft Shops which was a maker of A&C furnishings. One of my machines is an almost direct copy of a range of celarettes sold by Lakeside. Oh, and Lakeside Craft Shops should not be confused with the Lakeside brand of phonographs made by US Phonograph for Montgomery Ward. Confused.

A few other firms made what I call pseudo-Mission phonographs, in that they thought that a straight oak leg and no curves made it's Mission....they tend to look like something made in Wood Shop Class.

One of these days I'm going to get all that info together and publish it in CAPS and MAPS.

I believe that Columbia offered a variation of the Regent desk style phonograph in mission oak. Other than that I've never seen a Mission style machine, not even by one of the off brands. I've seen pictures of some late Regina music boxes in mission cases though- very awkward looking.

It may just be an example of his work with an old machine fitted into it, but it looks as if it could have been.

I don't recall any A&C Regina music boxes other than the Regina Musical Hall Clock in a 'Mission'-style case. These weren't actually music boxes, but were fitted with metal-disc actuated chime mechanisms. The Regina Musical Hall Clock was available in other style cabinets as well.

That's a neat looking model!
BTW, I've found that for some of these images, it's easier to simply call it up, press the "prt scr" button (screen capture) and then paste it into MS Paint, re-size it to fit, save it in JPG format, and then upload it to this board. (This, of course, is for Windows based PCs; I'm not sure if Apple has a Paint type program for saving or viewing jpg files.)

Edison made an A-60 Diamond Disc tabletop phonograph that is very much Arts and Crafts. Incidentally, I have a project one for sale if anyone is interested.
