The "Red Hand" is a small secretive Ulster loyalist paramilitary group in Northern Ireland and Edison apparently made special cylinders for them...

In color ads the hand holding up the record was in red. This was probably for customers not fluent in english.

It was just a way for someone to ask for Edison records even if they couldn’t remember which brand. It makes more sense when the ad is in color.

but you had the illustration.
If I recall, there was a rec cardboard hand dealers could set up to hold a real record. BTW- it also illustrated how to handle the cylinders without touching the grooves.
I recall that when Gillette blades always had a picture of Gillette on the wrapper customers would ask for the "Man's Face" brand.
