What do you guys think? Would this be great for checking out Edison stylii?

I have one of these USB Microscopes and you can get good results with a little practice.
They're available from Amazon in several different models. I recommend the model with the vertical stand for best control.

I selected the Jiusion 40 x 1000 with stand.
