I was going through some of my cylinders today and found something of interest. I have two copies of Blue Amberol #1924. One of the copies is normal and is titled "Crossing The Bar" by Mixed Quartet. But the other copy is spelled differently. It is titled "Crosing The Bar" by Edison Mixed Quartet.

Both are from the first take. The correct spelling is from mold 11 and the misspelled cylinder is from mold 54. Has anyone come across this sort of thing?

I've got one that has the title mangled: 3379 Songe d'Automne by Archibald Joyce is presented as [i]SONGS d' Automne.[/i] This is one of the pieces that the band played on the deck of the Titanic "... as the great ship went down to the bottom of the sea.." It's on the Titanic website. Or so I thought. The version that they present as an Edison cylinder is not in fact that one on 3379 so I don't know where it came from. The waltz was recorded on an early Diamond disc and I suspect this was the version on the website but it was obviously a later take used for the dub: bigger orchestra with a cymbal player so it's easy to tell the difference. It's very pretty and its minor mode is rather haunting and singularly appropriate for the " final selection..."

Thanks for the info Jim. These little mistakes make for interesting variations to collections. I find it interesting that these would be released without being checked for quality first. I wonder how many misspelled cylinders made it to the general public.

Typos were inevitable as Edison did not have "spell check."

They certainly needed spell check when it came to Fred Van Epps.
I've got cylinders that say Epps, Eps & Epp.

Speaking of spell check...I just read over my post and realized that I had used "it's" incorrectly which is something spell check will not catch. It's fixed now.
( And I used to teach English... )
