Who, besides Pathé’, made vertical cut records? And who made 5-7” vertical records for use with sapphire needles?

Verticals: Edison diamond discs, early Okeh, early Operaphone, Rex, early Emerson come to mind but I'm sure there are more.

Small verticals sapphire cut: Pathé etched. Operaphone made small verticals that are needle cut. Again, I'm sure there are others.

Par-o-ket made vertical cut records in 5 or 7 inch size, thereabouts (don't remember exactly, and too lazy to go track down my only example to measure it), but they were needle cut. Vocalion started out as vertical cut but pretty quickly went to lateral; I think the same can be said for Lyric. Diamond (not to be confused with Edison diamond discs) was another Pathé clone, as were Disque Ideal and Rishell. Emerson was a needle "universal" cut on a 45-degree bias to be playable, badly, by either type of reproducer.

Aeolion-Vocalion, Gennett, Domestic, Paramount, Puritan, Keen-O-Phone (founded upon the defunct Rex.)


Probably even a few more. Many of the above eventually converted to lateral discs when that patent thing was sorted.

Don't forget 1915 (1916?) Gennett Records. I found three and they play only electrically.

Also, Empire Talking Machine, Arto, and Operaphone made "Universal" Records said to play both vertically and laterally. They sound funky both ways.

I have some Rex discs. Even though they state sapphire ball on the label like Pathé, they play just fine on a modern turntable and cartridge + 78 stylus in vertical mode.

Another record is the early Okeh with the Indian on the label. It says on the label to use sapphire stylus. The later ones were needle cut.

Keen O Phone, Rex, early Gennett and Vocallion, quite a few obscure labels as well
