Surprise found inside an Edison reproducer

I brought a new Edison Home home (to my house) and got it working. The Model C reproducer sounded just awful, though. There was barely any volume. Meanwhile, the carriage lift lever was detached and the screw was missing. I took apart the reproducer, and found a mica diaphragm. There was also something lodged beneath it. I took the diaphragm off, and there was my missing screw. Weird. Maybe they had put it there for safe-keeping?

The early Model C did use a mica diaphragm.

Yes, They sure did. In all my years of reading, It was suggested that the Mica Diaphragms were used until 1903, then I read later on last year in an article they may have been used up to 1906 (Maybe just older 1903 stock sitting on a shelf at Edison Phono Works being sold until 1906?..) ....It's hard to pin down an "exact" date I have found...as to when the Mica stopped and the Copper Diaphragms started.
